About the
Center
The
Lions Eyeglasses Recycling Program was adopted as an official service
activity
of Lions Clubs International in October 1994. However, Lions have been
recycling eyeglasses for approximately 80 years.
Our
Center opened in April 1998 as a division of Virginia Lions Eyeglass
Recycling,
Inc., joining the center already operating in Roanoke, Virginia. We have since been joined by a second
division (the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center of Eastern Virginia). There are only 13 official Lions Eyeglass
Recycling Centers in the world operating at 15 sites (nine in the U.S., one each in Australia,
Canada, France, Italy,
Republic of South Africa, and Spain).
The
Center’s purpose is to provide eyeglasses to Lions and non-Lions that
sponsor missions
and to missions sponsored by the Center that carry them to the needy. Since opening and through the end of 2005 the
Center distributed over 400,000 pair of recycled eyeglasses to such
groups.
We
rely totally on volunteers to do the work and conduct the business of
the
Center.
