Upon return from the Lions International Convention we were encouraged to be part of a World Wide initiative: Planting 1 Million Trees globally. District 24-A has set a goal of 600 trees. We would like to not only achieve 100% of our goal but to exceed it by having all clubs participate. To really beat the number we can take a step beyond and partner with other organizations to make this a really special event. Awareness of our environment is far-reaching; we can look for partnering from: scouts, environmental groups, neighborhoods which have been deforested. Look around and you can find an area in your community needing trees.

We are encouraging the use of Virginia native trees. Fairfax County partners with ReLeaf, a non-profit organization, who will be providing our seedlings. We will need to give them the specie and quantity needed. This can be submitted on the “Count-Us -In” Form.

We encourage you to use this opportunity to serve the local community by demonstrating how much fun it is to be a Lion. We look forward to the creative nature which Lions attack a goal and bring it home. The results are being tracked world-wide and can be seen on: http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/member-center/membership-and-new-clubs/global-membership-team/presidents-theme/million-tree/index.php

Suggested Locations:

  • Parks
  • Schools
  • VDOT median strips – requires a no-charge permit from VDOT.

Trees can be planted:

  • From seed or cutting (pieces of a branch) directly into the ground;
  • Plant seedlings grown in a nursery; or
  • Transplant a wild seedling from another area.

What you can do:

  • Talk to your Club and set a goal, create an event.

(Trees will need to be maintained, so this is a long term commitment.)

  • Select a location in need of trees (contact Linda for suggestions)
  • Get necessary permissions to plant.
  • Send in the: “Count-Us-In” form

Let us know how many seedling trees you will need and the type of trees and proposed date of planting.

  • Name of partner and contact information.
  • Publicize your event in neighborhood newsletters, papers and of course Lions newsletters.
  Looking forward some great service,
  Thanks Lions,
