Lions Clubs International chartered the Spotsylvania Lions Club on December 20, 1966.  The 37 original Charter Members included many county businessmen, educators, local government officials, and other county citizens.  Its current membership continues to be representative of the community it serves.

The Club has raised many thousands of dollars in support of community needs through many types of fundraisers.  These fundraisers have included over the years, raffles of all types, firewood sales, broom sales, carnivals, food concessions, fruit sales, candy sales, craft shows, yard sales, golf tournaments, golf-a-thons, art and wine shows, spring flower shows, and direct public appeals such as its White Cane Days.

The Spotsylvania Lions Club Charities, Incorporated is the charity arm of the Club.  It is a 501c(3) charitable foundation approved by the Internal Revenue Service on April 10, 2002.  One hundred percent of the funds raised by the foundation are applied to its charities; and its members pay for the club’s administrative costs.

The Club’s main focus since receiving its Charter in 1966 has been the identification of and service to the sight impaired.  Priority is given to youth sight needs that are identified and processed in coordination with the responsible county school nurse.  The adult sight needs are identified and processed through the county Department of Social Services.  The Club has also supported hearing, diabetes, drug awareness, youth programs, and other community needs during its existence.  The Club implemented the Lions Clubs International Quest Drug Awareness Program in the then three county middle schools beginning in the Fall of 1986 in coordination with the county school system.  In addition, the Club has also awarded scholarships for a number of years to graduating county seniors and students at Germanna Community College.

Membership in the Spotsylvania Lions Club is open to ALL service minded men and women.  Its members believe in the Lions Club International motto – WE SERVE – as demonstrated by their many years of service to their local and world communities.

The Club’s logo is based on the “Knights of the Golden Horseshoe” legend established by Virginia ’s Colonial Governor Alexander Spotswood in 1716.  This is also considered an extension of the “Knights of the Blind” charge given to the Lions members by the famous Helen Keller at the 1925 Lions Clubs International Convention.
